CUP ROUND

Ballajura 2– 4 Golden Lily

Ballajura AFC will have to watch the Sunday League Cup from the sidelines this year after a 4-2 loss to Golden Lily today. The side put up a late comeback but it was not enough to see the side through to the next round.

Ballajura conceded within the first five minutes when a cross found a Golden Lily attacker at the back post who headed home with tremendous power. Ten minutes later, Ballajura were 2-0 down after a poor pass allowed the home side's winger to get to the byline and whip in a cross to the back post and the attacker made no mistake in scoring.

Ballajura pulled a goal back through Damien Fouracre after being put through by Cody Bolton. Tempers flared after the Golden Lily players deemed a Bolton tackle was reckless, but there was no malice in the challenge. A corner that deflected right into the path of a Golden Lily attacker made things worse for the visitors as Golden Lily went up 3-1. A defensive mix up allowed a fourth goal for Golden Lily as what was thought to be offside was deemed correct as an injured defender kept the attackers onside and the nail in the coffin was put in place. Fouracre notched a second with roughly 12 minutes left but it was not enough time for Ballajura to send the game into extra time.

Ballajura Reserves 5 – 3 Golden Lily

Ballajura Reserves stormed into the second round of the League Cup with a hard fought 5-3 victory over Golden Lily. Things got off to a great start when Steve Mammoliti latched onto new face Ruggy Shariff's pin point cross on the half volley in the 16th minute. Just four minutes later, a corner kick from Jason Earley sailed straight into the back of the net, deceiving the Golden Lily goalkeeper. Golden Lily hit back not long after a quick succession of passes found the unmarked attacker at the back post, who made no mistake from a great position.

The second half got off to a flyer for Ballajura as Ben Vincent's strike from outside the box after a corner was trundled in by the goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Ben Hasker scored from a cross/shot which decieved the keeper and ended up in the back of the net. Hasler notched his second goal with a cooly placed effort past the keeper in the 75th minute which seemed to wrap the game up at this point. Golden Lily made things tense towards the end of the game with two goals in 5 minutes, one through poor marking by Ballajura and the other a dodgy penalty gifted to the home team.

Ballajura Reserves ended up 5-3 winners though after the tense finish and look forward to another great cup run this season.
